Morning jogging for weight loss

Morning jogging is often recommended as a means for weight loss and overall health. Running, you can burn calories, "shake" your body, to develop stamina.
The benefits of jogging long debate and discussion. In fact, after sleep the body needs some time to get down to work properly, and running load may be excessive for the not yet "woken up" the body.
To morning run was really useful and enjoyable, it is necessary to observe a number of rules and conditions. First, do not seek to get out for a run immediately after waking up. During the time while you wash and dress the body finally "wake up" and ready to load.
Going for a run, you should think about his sports gear. Need to dress comfortably for the weather. If the outside temperature does not exceed 10 ° C with a plus sign, then necessarily need knitted cap that covers the ears. Shoes must also comply with the weather - winter jogging better shod winterized sneakers.
Need to start jogging with a small workout. To warm up, you can walk intensive step, jump, do light stretching, a few squats. Thus you warms the muscles, preparing them for further load.
Actually running to start with the minimum pace and within two or three minutes to bring his pace to the optimum. The intensity of races should choose according to your opportunities and challenges that you set for yourself. If your goal - weight loss, you can use the "ragged" pace, ie alternation of acceleration and quiet pace (jog). Each acceleration lasts about 1-2 minutes. To strengthen their immunity and maintain good health, choose jogging at a pace at which you have minimal shortness of breath.
Need to run properly. Feet should be slightly bent at the knees, body weight is distributed on the whole foot, landing from heel to toe. Body tilt is not necessary, and the arms should be bent at an angle of about 120 ° C and does not intersect in front of chest. No need to strain your neck, shoulders, arms or jaws compress.
Extremely important for a morning jog (and not only) the correct breathing technique. Inhale air should nose, and exhale - mouth. With this breath is a uniform light saturation oxygen. You need to try to do a full inhale and exhale, breathe evenly, not too often. When breathing is "unbearable", it is time to complete a run - extra torture to anything.
Completing morning jog should gradually. With running, go to step aligning breath. In any case it is impossible to stop or dramatically, especially fall on the grass. For hitches can perform several simple, relaxation exercises.
Duration and "mileage" jogging you need to choose based on your athletic training. Untrained person can not immediately start classes with large long-distance races. In addition, muscle pain and a feeling of "exhaustion" does not add enthusiasm to run regularly. Therefore, you should start with a minimum duration, even if it is just 5 minutes. Gradually increase the duration of jogging for 3-5 minutes each day.
Take a shower after jogging is not only an aesthetic but also from a physiological standpoint. Running, you sweat and together with then leave the body toxins. If this does not wash away the sweat, all these harmful substances reabsorbed into the skin.
Before embarking on a morning jog, make sure that you do not have health problems, where such exercises are contraindicated. Be sure to consult with your doctor whether you jog, if you suffer from disorders of the cardiovascular system, have problems with joints or spine, serious eye problems. It should also suspend the training, if you get cold.
Running - wonderful sport and if you follow all the necessary safety measures, then jogging will bring you only benefit and joy!

Top 20 weight loss hacks

The greatest journey starts with a single step. The journey towards our own best bodies is just the same.
Its a daily decision to take those small steps towards where we want to be. The good news, with this, is that you can take a step back here and there and still be moving in the right direction.
It may not be the fastest way to reach your goal but its the most likely way to sustain the pace in the long run.
Without further ado, here are 20 top tweaks to lose weight and keep it lost.
1. Set a small, specific goal. Stick it somewhere you will see it every day
Creating a measurable vision you can take steps towards works. A Harvard study from the 70s found that those who had a specific goal earned, on average, twice as much as those that didnt have a goal. Those that wrote down their goals earned even more. The point is when were clear about what we want we are far more likely to achieve it.
2. Focus only on losing the next kilo
Whether you want to lose two or twenty kilograms, keeping the attention on the immediate goals helps to keep you from feeling overwhelmed. It also means you have more regular reasons to celebrate your wins.
3. Have exercise dates with your family, friends or partner
When time is of the essence, this is a way to kill two birds with one stone. Jogging on treadmills side-by-side may not be your thing (and thank God really that its not), but you might have a group game of volleyball, go paddleboarding, play cricket or squash.
Research shows that exercise with others releases more endorphins (the happiness hormones) than when you exercise alone and also helps us to bond with others.
4. Know what works for you
Everyone is different, so get clear on the strategies that help you to succeed. For some people its working out as soon as you wake up, for others its doing exercise that you find fun. It might be eating healthily and having a cheat day or it might mean having one small treat each day.
5. Schedule exercise
Making the time official is making a commitment to yourself, your body and your health. Planning also helps you to create consistency and integrate exercise into your everyday life. It means you can slot in some high intensity exercise if you only have 20 minutes on one day and book into a longer class when youve a little more time the next. New sites, like Fitness Calendar, can help you to plan your week ahead.
6. Work up a sweat from exercise at least a few times a week
Its good to get moving every day, but amping up the intensity at least a few times a week will also amp up your results (assuming youre healthy and do not have a heart condition). Working yourself into a sweat gives a natural boost to human growth hormone (HGH) production – which is essential for optimal health – and research shows, it improves insulin sensitivity, boosts fat loss, and increases muscle growth.
7. Shake up your exercise to keep your body guessing and your mind fresh
Our muscles adjust when we do the same exercises repeatedly and as we plateau, we stop seeing results. The easiest way to counter this is to remember that variety is the spice of exercise, as it is life.
Play around with the intensity and switch up aerobic exercise with strength training, flexibility, core exercise and balance training.
8. Try on your jeans once a week to keep track of how youre going
Arguably a better approach than scales – which do not show weight gain from muscle mass - trying on your jeans will show that your waist and hips are cinching in while your butt, like a little sunflower, perks up.
9. Take before and after pictures
Hard evidence that the slog is paying off. This is a simple, but invaluable method demonstrating you have the power to transform yourself.
10. Sign up to a challenge and join a group to train for it
In the spirit of one step at a time, a fitness challenge gives us a short-term goal to work towards, tangible results (which are essential for motivation and our sense of progress) and the support and camaraderie from training towards that goal in a group makes it fun and helps to spur you along.
11. Incorporate greens into your day. Every day.
Blend em, juice em, fry em, eat em. Greens are a no brainer and pretty much the one thing every health professional agrees we need more of – to be healthy and if we want our bodies to look their best.
Low in calories but high in nutrients, they help keep us full and give our bodies the fuel they need to be lean, mean efficient machines theyre meant to be.
12. Keep a food journal and be utterly honest in it
I know, it can seem like a waste of precious time and surely you already know what and how much you eat. Dont you? In fact many of us would be surprised to see the unconscious extra calories we consume.
A diary – which is easiest if we write (or type it) as we go – is a simple (and free) way to create awareness about what were really eating. Research also shows that they can be a key component in losing extra weight.
13. Enjoy healthy monounsaturated fats like avocado, nuts, olive oil and tuna
Its about time the "fat makes you fat" myth has been debunked. An abundance of researchshows that "good" fats help reduce heart disease, lower cholesterol levels and have other health benefits when they replace saturated fats in the diet. Increasing your fat intake can actually help weight loss.
14. Remember that there can be too much of a good thing and keep an eye on your portion sizes
Dietitian Susie Burrell says she sees many healthy, fit individuals doing their very best to eat well. "But such an intense focus on including as many healthy foods in the diet as possible has resulted in ... a calorie overload".
She says were looking for a couple of serves a day of healthy fats. One serve translates into 100-150g of oily fish, ¼ of an avocado, a handful of nuts or seeds and a couple of teaspoons of oil.
15. Have occasions when you indulge in your favourite foods and enjoy them without guilt
Simply, if we have a little flexibility with food and can include our favourite things then we will have more staying power. Some research even suggests indulging once a week can aid your weight loss efforts.
16. Prioritise sleep
Getting enough sleep (and this will vary from person to person, but tends to be at least 7 to 8 hours a night) impacts metabolism, weight, mood and cardiovascular health among other things. So for your health, fitness and sanity, its worth making time to save time.
17. Up the ante on your water intake and have a jug or flask with you wherever you go
Most adults lose about 2.5 to 3 litres of water a day. Most of us also dont drink enough to replenish what we lose and not only is it vital, it keeps our skin in spanking condition, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, and can also even help us lose weight. So bottoms up.
18. See a doctor and get the support you need if you have health concerns
There are various medical reasons why those who are eating right and acting right may not be losing weight. So, if you feel like something is not right dont shut up and put up.
19. Take time out to rest, recover and spend in nature
"Nature is fuel for the soul." While standing in the grass and "earthing" might sound a little hippy, being in nature also energises us, improves our immunity and gives us a heightened sense of wellbeing.
20. Practise self-compassion
We dont get it right every step of the way and sometimes we slip and fall into the tub of ice cream, miss a workout or get screamingly drunk. If we can be gentle with ourselves and resolve to keep guiding ourselves back on track this will help us stay the course. Research shows self-compassion may just be the most important life skill and helps us develop resilience, courage and energy.

OBESE TO BEAST JOHN GLAUDES 170 POUND WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY

John Glaude made a name for himself by being brutally honest about the struggles and challenges that come along with big-time weight loss. Heres this YouTube personalitys inside perspective on what it takes to lose 170 pounds!
John Glaude transformed the right way, the way we ask our readers to change: slow and steady. He didnt go on some reality show, sweat out half a man, relapse, and fall out of the public eye. He changed his diet and committed to regular training. And as a reward, he lost 170 pounds and achieved a truly dramatic transformation of body, mind, and life.
The process, which Glaude detailed starting last spring on his Instagram and YouTube channels "Obese to Beast," earned him thousands of fans and followers. But what finally made him famous was a single video in November 2014, which has now been watched well over 7 million times. If you havent seen it, be prepared for one of the most inspiring and real perspectives on fitness youll ever see.
As the video shows, Glaude is a natural speaker and entertainer. He shined when he went on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to talk about his video (Ellen also gave him a red Ford Mustang). But this 22-year-old barista hasnt allowed fame to go to his head. When he spoke with Bodybuilding.com, he was walking on the stair climber. But he still made time to give us a frank perspective on his journey and where it goes from here.
WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO GET FIT?
VITAL STATS
Name: John Glaude
Age: 22
Before Weight: 360 pounds
After Weight: 190 pounds
Height: 58"
Occupation: Barista
Education: High school
I was 20 years old, I had been out of high school for two years, and I weighed 360 pounds. The only time I ever left my house was to go to work, and then I would go back home and watch TV. Thats all I did, and I hated it. I wouldnt sit there and be "fat and happy." I really hated it.
There are so many people that are there now, where I was. I honestly didnt think I could change. I didnt think there was anything I could do. There were nights where I literally cried myself to sleep because I knew that I was killing myself every single time I ate—every time—and it scared me.
Sure, I wanted to change to save my own life, but the click that happened was very simple. I was binge-watching "Miami Ink" on Netflix, and a guy came on who had lost a lot of weight. They asked him how he did it, and he preached basically what I preach today: You take it into your own hands. You learn about nutrition, and you execute what you learned. Then, you go to the gym and you work your butt off.
I realized at that moment that I was doing this to myself, and the only person who would ever get me to change was me. The only person who could stop me from changing was also me. I realized that I needed to do this for myself or I was going to die—at what, 35 years old? Maybe 450 pounds? I was scared, but I remember telling myself, "I might as well try my hardest, because I have nothing else."
YOU HAD TRIED AND FAILED IN THE PAST. WHAT WAS DIFFERENT THIS TIME?
I cant explain the moment—like, what happened inside of me—but there was just a click that happened. I knew from that point on that there was no going back. I was going to transform. It was going to work.
Since then, its just been uphill and its been a battle with plenty of struggles. But I see now that if there are going to be a lot of mountaintops, there are going to be a lot of valleys. I just know if Im not going to give up, Im not going to fail.
DID YOU EVER HIRE A PERSONAL TRAINER OR DID YOU JUST DO IT ON YOUR OWN?
I just did it on my own. Im not against using a personal trainer, but I dont have very much money and they cost a good amount. I always recommend that people hire one if they do have money—its definitely a good investment—but if you dont, its not the end of the world.
DO YOU LOOK AT PEOPLE—BOTH FIT PEOPLE AND OBESE PEOPLE—DIFFERENTLY AFTER GOING THROUGH WHAT YOU DID?
When I see people who are morbidly obese like I was, I feel like... I dont want to say "bad," because thats not the word. I think, "If they only knew they could change and that its possible to do it." Because when I was morbidly obese, I would see these transformations and I would always think that they were faked—like they got surgery or took pills. Theres no way they could lose 150 pounds or more naturally.
But, I promise you, if you take your time and do the research, you can achieve this. This is possible for anyone, period. When I see people who are morbidly obese, I want to go up to them and talk to them and tell them that, but obviously I cant. It wouldnt be very well taken.
AT WHAT POINT DID YOU DECIDE TO MAKE YOUR TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY PUBLIC, AND WHY?
For a while I didnt really post much about losing the weight. I felt like, at first, it was something I was doing for me. My friends would say that I was helping them with their fitness goals, and this made me realize that maybe I can help people I dont even know. At that point I decided to go public.
I was posting a lot of fitness stuff on my personal Instagram, but I know all my friends arent into fitness, and they probably dont want to see all my stuff, so I opened a new account. Obviously I wanted to help people, but I also wanted to try to separate the two.
The funny thing is that Obese to Beast has basically taken over. I dont have a separate Instagram account anymore. I realized that I could help people Id never met and I wanted to go for it and see what happened. I never expected whats happening to happen, but Im happy about it.
HOW HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED SINCE YOU POSTED THE VIDEO, "MY BIGGEST INSECURITY?"
When the video went viral, that obviously wasnt the plan. I freaked out when that happened, but it was awesome that it did. I didnt realize how many people were struggling with loose skin like I was. Ive had people message me who were planning on getting surgery and cancelled. They wrote that they first couldnt afford it and then realized that they dont need it.
Stuff like that tugs at my heart. It makes me so proud. Any amount of money or a car—even my Mustang—could never amount to that feeling you get when someone says, "You helped me change."
Thats why I started the channel. I wanted to show people that natural weight loss and weight loss in general is possible if you just try your hardest and just keep going. There are going to be slip-ups and bumps; no road to success is straight, ever.
Now Im in contact with people I would have never imagined I would ever be in contact with. I work at Starbucks, and people will just come up like, Hey, can we get a picture? The main thing though, is that Im able to help so many more people because my subscriber count went up and people see me more and they use me as motivation. Thats more than I could have ever asked for.
Today Im working out with some of my friends—I mean theyre my friends now, but I met them through social media—and theyre just the best people. Theyre so happy and genuinely want to learn; theyre changing their lives in front of my eyes. People say I motivate them, but they dont understand how much they motivate me.
LETS DO A LITTLE WORD ASSOCIATION:
- Obese: Obese is a word that people use for description, but its something that obese people also use as an excuse to not try as hard as they can.
- Weakness: This is something that is inside your head mostly. You just have to overcome it.
- Confidence: Confidence is something that is in every single person. When you find it, your whole life will change, guaranteed.
- Tired: Tired is a word that people use when they dont want to try anymore. Its something that can easily be overcome with the right mindset.
- Strength: Strength is realizing that—even if you feel like youre tired or weak, or all those words that you used before—you still can push. Strength is just pushing no matter how hard it gets.
- Beast: A beast just doesnt quit. Its something that keeps going until there is nothing left, either in what the beast is going for, or in the thing itself.
YOURE ONLY 22 YEARS OLD. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE?
My plan is to do something related to fitness and helping people reach their goals. The YouTube thing is very lucrative, and there are definitely avenues I can use to help me help more people. I could go into online coaching, for one. The opportunity is still so fresh that theres no definite answer to what road I want to take.
More than anything, my motivation today comes from people who tell me that I motivate them. That, honestly, I cant explain. People tell me I motivate them, and that motivates me to keep going. I cant get that through enough.
I dont want to call people "my fans," because thats not how I see it. I feel like people who support someone else dont realize how much that support means to that person. Obviously this is just my life now, so going to the gym isnt a chore for me. Its what I look forward to every day. When Im at work, I look forward to getting off to go to the gym. Its where I like to be at now.
I dont want to say that its not hard to be motivated, but I just have so much encouragement behind me that its hard not to be motivated. It would be hard for me not to go to the gym. If I didnt show up at the gym or post on Instagram for three days, I would have people asking, "Where are you? Whats going on? Why havent you posted anything on YouTube?" I have people behind me who will always be there for me.
EVERY JANUARY, THOUSANDS TRY TO START TRANSFORMATIONS. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEBODY IN A BAD SPOT WHO NEEDS A LITTLE MOTIVATION?
Dont let people who might look at you funny scare you! Most of the time theyre not trying to be mean; its just that this happens every year. Ive seen a lot of fit people who have a stigma toward people who are new—the "New Years Resolutioners." People make them seem like they are not worth even taking up space in the gym.
So just get in there. Do your research, and go in there with a plan. Thats the most important thing I can say to someone. Dont go in lost. Go in knowing what youre going to be doing for that day, and execute. Dont let people who say something to you or give you dirty looks throw you off your path. What they say to you doesnt matter.
Its you versus you, not you versus the person whos already fit. Stick to the plan you made. Remember why you decided to make the resolution. Remember where you started, and why you started. That will propel you forward.
THATS AWESOME, JOHN. FOR ALL YOU GIVE, IT SEEMS LIKE YOU GET BACK EVEN MORE.
Yeah, it really is awesome! Its good to see it all come together and pay it forward. I dont see how a person could get what I have and not want to help someone else achieve that as well. Its such an awesome thing that I want everyone to have it—and everyone can.
Thats what I preach. Its not like I have something that is amazing and Im better than anyone. People tell me all the time that they wish they had the motivation. You do have the motivation. Its in you; you need to find it!
A lot of people who are morbidly obese or just overweight almost feel like theyre not worth the change. I was the same way. You feel like youre just going to fail anyways. Thats the mindset I was in. Im trying to show people that you are worth it.
Nobody is better than anyone. Were all the same, were all humans. Im not some superhuman. Im the same as everyone else. Im the same person I was when I was 360 pounds, too. I just found the motivation inside me to keep going every single day.

Why You Should Avoid Using HCG for Weight Loss

What is HCG?
HCG or human chorionic gonadotropin is a protein-based hormone that supports the normal development of an egg in a womans ovary, and stimulates the release of the egg during ovulation. HCG is used to cause ovulation and to treat infertility in women, and to increase sperm count in men. HCG is also used in young boys when their testicles have not dropped down into the scrotum normally. This can be caused by a pituitary gland disorder.
HCG for Weight Loss… More recently, HCG has been in the news as a weight loss “aid.” Ads claim it “targets the fat” and “reduces cravings.” However, HCG providers prescribe a 500-calorie diet, too. A very-low-calorie-diet (defined as 800 cal/day or lower) alone would result in significant weight loss. However, there are risks associated with a VLCD, and medical monitoring is suggested as a standard of medical care. The American Society of Bariatric Physicians Position Statement on the use of VLCDs is an informative resource. http://www.asbp.org
Why do people claim they are not hungry?
The decrease in hunger emphasized in HCG ads is likely attributed to the dietary emphasis on higher protein intake and/or carbohydrate restriction resulting in ketosis. These dietary regimens are associated with diminished hunger sensation. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18175736
What about HCG drops?
HCG is sold as drops to be absorbed “under the tongue” or sublingually. There is a “ceiling” with regard to the size of a molecule that can be absorbed orally, and that is approximately 1500 daltons, a measure for molecular weight. HCG’s molecular weight is approximately 30,000 daltons—about six times larger than insulin, which, by the way, has to be injected. Neither insulin nor HCG can be absorbed orally.
What about homeopathic or chiroHCG sold by chiropractors?
Homeopathy is based the belief that disease symptoms can be cured by small doses of substances which produce similar symptoms in healthy people. All HCG drop formulations are inert, or having no pharmacological action, due to high molecular weight. Moreover, it is the specific shape and structure of a molecule on which the hormone’s action depends. In other words, it has to fit like a “key into a lock” or nothing happens. Therefore, it would be impossible to “take a small dose” or “a segment” of a hormone and expect to cause any kind of biological action.
What if I swallow HCG?
Even IF drop formulations actually contained HCG, the protein molecule would pass into the stomach where it would be broken down into small peptides and amino acids by gastric acid—just like your dinner portion of chicken—again, no potential for biological action!
What about HCG injections?
HCG can be given by injection by a licensed physician under “off-label” use. However, doing so is not risk free. This medicine can increase chances of a multiple pregnancy. Some women using this medicine have developed a condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), especially after the first treatment cycle. You should NOT use this medicine if you are at risk for a hormone-related cancer such as tumor of the breast, ovary, uterus, prostate, hypothalamus, or pituitary gland.
What is the FDA’s stance on HCG?
Since 1975, the FDA has considered the use of HCG for weight loss to be fraudulent and requires labels for HCG to state: HCG HAS NO KNOWN EFFECT ON FAT MOBILIZATION, APPETITE OR SENSE OF HUNGER, OR BODY FAT DISTRIBUTION. HCG HAS NOT BEEN DEMONSTRATED TO BE EFFECTIVE ADJUNCTIVE THERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF OBESITY. THERE IS NO SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE THAT IT INCREASES WEIGHT LOSS BEYOND THAT RESULTING FROM CALORIC RESTRICTION, THAT IT CAUSES A MORE ATTRACTIVE OR “NORMAL” DISTRIBUTION OF FAT, OR THAT IT DECREASES THE HUNGER AND DISCOMFORT ASSOCIATED WITH CALORIE-RESTRICTED DIETS.
Has the Federal Trade Commission taken action?
In 1976, the FTC ordered the Simeon Management Corporation, Simeon Weight Clinics Foundation, Bariatrics Management Corporation, C.M. Norcal, Inc., and HCG Weight Clinics Foundation and their officers to stop claiming that their HCG-based programs were safe, effective, and/or approved by the FDA for weight-control. Although the order did not stop the clinics from using HCG, it required that patients who contract for the treatment be informed in writing that:
THESE WEIGHT REDUCTION TREATMENTS INCLUDE THE INJECTION OF HCG, A DRUG WHICH HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED BY THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION AS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE IN THE TREATMENT OF OBESITY OR WEIGHT CONTROL. THERE IS NO SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE THAT HCG INCREASES WEIGHT LOSS BEYOND THAT RESULTING FROM CALORIC RESTRICTION, THAT IT CAUSES A MORE ATTRACTIVE OR "NORMAL" DISTRIBUTION OF FAT, OR THAT IT DECREASES THE HUNGER AND DISCOMFORT ASSOCIATED WITH CALORIE-RESTRICTIVE DIETS.
What is the opinion of physicians trained in obesity management?
In 2009, the American Society of Bariatric Physicians issued a position statement which stated:
Numerous clinical trials have shown HCG to be ineffectual in producing weight loss. HCG injections can induce a slight increase in muscle mass in androgen-deficient males. The diet used in the Simeons method provides a lower protein intake than is advisable in view of current knowledge and practice. There are few medical literature reports favorable to the Simeons method; the overwhelming majority of medical reports are critical of it. Physicians employing either the HCG or the diet recommended by Simeons may expose themselves to criticism from other physicians, from insurers, or from government bodies. http://www.asbp.org/resources/uploads/files/HCG%20Position%20Statement.pdf
What have the studies on HCG revealed?
A meta-analysis of eight controlled and 16 uncontrolled trials that measured the effect of HCG in the treatment of obesity shows no benefit to using HCG. It was concluded that there is no scientific evidence that HCG is effective in the treatment of obesity; it does not bring about weight-loss of fat-redistribution, nor does it reduce hunger or induce a feeling of well-being.

Prevent hairfall when on a weight loss programme

Case study: Shruti, 25, works in an IT firm. She started a weight loss programme three months ago, and lost about eight kgs. But now, she has started losing a lot of hair and is worried.
Shruti is not alone. With crash diets and unreasonable weight loss goals becoming a fad, this trend of losing hair is seen in many weight-watchers, say hair experts.
Cosmetic dermatologist Dr Snehal Sriram says, "It is a common phenomenon to lose hair when one loses weight (especially in case of crash dieting). This happens as dietary restrictions often lead to deficiency of micronutrients. This deprives our hair of nourishment at its roots."
She explains that for our body, hair is the least important organ, as hair is not vital to bodys survival like other organs — heart, lungs, brain, kidneys. So, whenever our body is put through any nutritional deficiency or stress (eg. crash dieting), blood supply and nourishment gets diverted to vital organs.
Sometimes, certain diet programmes lead to micronutrient deficiencies, especially those of biotin, pantothenate and essential fatty acids which leads to dry and rough hair. These deficiencies cause severe hair fall.
Dr Sriram says, "This problem can be dealt with the help of health promoting treatments, scalp exfoliation and rejuvenating treatments that make hair strong and healthy from the roots. Along with these, specific nutritional supplements containing biotin, calcium pantothenate, L-cysteine, methionine, zinc and antioxidants and the right hair care products can help combat the condition."
A proper diet can affect your hair health in a very big way. Nutritionist Karishma Chawla says, "A balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat is a must. The right complex fibrous carbs — whole wheat products, fruits and vegetables — are extremely essential. A mix of lean protein such as egg and milk products are also important. Fat in the form of omega 3 items such as almonds, walnuts, fish oil and flaxseeds are good."
Following these steps will protect and energise your scalp, ensuring that you only lose your weight and not your hair...
- When starting a weight loss programme, also start on the right haircare regime based on your current hair and scalp condition.
- Start specific hair nutrient supplements, ideally the ones containing all 14 essential vitamins and minerals — especially amino acids, biotin and calcium pantothenate.
- Start having soya, sprouts, paneer, curd and egg whites.
- Add colour to your food, especially antioxidants like two cups of green tea and two different coloured fruits (eg. pomegranates) or salads (carrots, tomatoes, beetroots, green vegetables).
- Omega 3 fatty acids add shine and prevent frizz. Take three walnuts and one tbsp flaxseeds daily.
- Drink two to three litres of water every day. Water is essential for hair too.
- Start hair treatments early. Opt for treatments delivering the right nutrients directly to the root of hair, along with rejuvenating treatments. These make the roots strong and healthy, enabling damage resistance.
Dos and donts
- Dont skip any meal — reduce your portion size instead. Ensure small frequent meals with a balanced diet. Cut down on carbohydrates, but dont avoid them. Avoid saturated fats though.
- Avoid foods containing preservatives — eg ketchups, sauces, aerated soft drinks etc.
- Avoid smoking — this further reduces the nutrients reaching your hair roots.
- Avoid further damage to hair until your hair roots are strengthened.
- Especially, stay away from salon treatments that break the hair bonds, like straightening, colouring or even frequent ironing.
- Avoid frequent hot mode blow drying. Air dry your hair or use the cold mode in the hair dryer.
- Dont neglect that little itching and dandruff, as it can intensify and weaken the roots.
- Use an antifungal shampoo two to three times a week, keep it on the scalp for five minutes for best results.

Exercise after weight loss surgery may boost health improvements

People who add a little walking to their routines after weight loss surgery decrease their risk of diabetes and improve their heart health more than those who stay sedentary, according to a new study.
“For a large percentage of the severely obese, they may exercise but don’t necessarily gain improvement in metabolic factors, so this is clinically significant,” said lead author Paul M. Coen of the division of Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
“The fact that we see this isn’t trivial,” he told Reuters Health.
For the study, researchers divided 128 adults, mostly women, who had recently undergone roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery into two groups. One group received only a health education program while the other group participated in a semi-supervised moderate exercise program as well.
The education-only group attended six sessions per month of lectures, discussions and demonstrations providing information on medication use, nutrition and upper-body stretching.
The exercise group also attended the education sessions plus engaged in two hours of moderate exercise, mostly walking, each week during the six-month study.
Researchers used blood tests before and after the study to measure insulin resistance and glucose tolerance, both indicators of how well the body processes sugar. Poor results are associated with a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
At the beginning of the study, both groups had similar glucose and insulin measures, although they were poorer than levels expected for similar people of healthy weight, the authors write in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Insulin tolerance levels improved for both groups after surgery, but the greatest improvement was among those who had exercised more than two hours per week.
The same was true of glucose uptake and metabolism, and of measures of cardiorespiratory fitness.
“Insulin sensitivity and cardiorespiratory fitness are both important indices of metabolic health,” Coen said. “Any improvement in both is likely to reduce future risk of cardiometabolic disease.”
Both groups lost a similar amount of weight and reduced their waist circumference by the same amount in the course of the study.
Within three to four weeks after surgery patients will have recovered enough to start exercising, Coen said, and should try any activity they are likely to stick with - whether a gym program, bicycling, swimming, gardening or another option.
Most patients are not very physically active before surgery, but The American Heart Association and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommend mild exercise before surgery to facilitate postoperative recovery, he said.
National organizations including The Obesity Society recommend that patients adhere to a healthy lifestyle including exercise for 30 minutes per day, but there are no more specific evidence-based pre or post-operative guidelines for physical activity, he said.
“We hope that this study will play a role in formulating patient recommendations in the future, “Coen said.
In addition to other health measures, exercise may help bariatric surgery patients lose more weight after the six-month period this study covered, he said.
“The common dogma is that (surgery) is a magic cure for diabetes and weight and maybe they don’t need to do anything else,” Coen said. “But our results show that there is still room for therapeutic benefit of exercise.”
