Are You Going To Eat Real Food Again
Alright, show of hands. Anyone else feel like the holiday season has lasted inordinately long this year? They start decking the halls the second the Halloween decorations are put away, and the local radio stations been playing holiday music 24/7 since Thanksgiving. All the to-ing and fro-ing, the endless parties, the hype and hoopla. Its just over the top.And Good Lord, the food! The Hungarians gathered, not once but twice, over the course of a four-day period to celebrate (read: feast and drink themselves into a stupor). Funny thing – when were doing the imbibing, we rarely notice the gluttony. I never noticed the vast amount of alcohol my family members consume until I took my last drink in 1990.
To not drink or not eat is seen as a personal affront. My not-drinking created more of a ruckus than my drinking ever did (and trust me, I created plenty a ruckus back in the day). A chorus of "Oh cmon, you can have just one" was heard at every family event for years thereafter. The words addict, alcoholic, disease, and no thank you just didnt register.
I have a life-threatening allergy to alcohol and cannot safely drink finally did the trick, and the Hungarians never bothered me again. Now, its just common knowledge that I dont consume alcohol. A non-issue, really.
Just as were about to sit down to eat on Christmas Eve, my eldest brother asks, "Hey, now that youve lost all this weight, are you going to start eating real food again?" Everyone stops mid-motion and it becomes absolutely quiet as 17 pairs of eyes are now on me, waiting for that resounding "Why yes! Please pass the chicken paprikash" (and all will be right with the world, amen).
Isnt it funny? Real food: injected with growth hormones, antibiotics and preservatives; smothered in sugar, flour or fat; depleted of any and all vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
Yes well, even though I chose not to eat any of that "real food" (*smirk*) over the holidays, I know I consumed more nuts – almonds, pecans, cashews, walnuts – in the last four weeks than I have in the past four years. Somehow, I managed not to gain any weight. Didnt lose any either. So, this is the first month since July that the scale has not moved down. Thats okay. Im still going to bid adieu to 2008, 73 pounds lighter. Yup, gonna keep eating that "crazy" stuff that comes right from the earth and is filled with life force energy.
Wanna join me?
I know a fabulous place where a whole community of folks hang out, offering support, encouragement, recipes, tips, stories, laughter...youll be welcomed with open arms and fit right in. Promise. So, cmon and join me in Raw Food Rehab.

Experts say that despite all efforts, there are some things that can not be achieved by a big effect on weight loss. Here are 11 down with their plans to play it smart:
1 sleep deprived.
According to a Gallup poll, 40% of people get less than 7 hours of sleep per night. Without this precious time in your eyes, cortisol, the stress hormone and blood sugar levels and insulin-all in the feet that connect to your hunger. Lack of sleep also causes insulin resistance, making it easier to save for your body, says JJ Virgin, celebrity nutrition and fitness expert and bestselling author of The New York Times, which makes the system Virgin.
2 With a heavy workout as an excuse to eat.
Just because you do not burn 700 calories in the gym, it is a free ride that you want to eat. You can not eat anything with the intention of later, because it will burn too much exercise can lead to overtraining and weight plateau, Yuri Elkaim said, nutritionist and fitness expert and author of the form feed the day of the total energy. 6 stressed.
A recent study found that women earn 11 pounds a year if they are under stress. Stress increases cortisol, which breaks down muscle and decreased serotonin, which makes you want more sweet foods. Moreover, because the reduced cortisol acid stomach, they are inefficient process more hunger.
7 He trains hard.
You are a queen, but too much cardio can be cons-productive. Interval training is better qualified for loss or less in a short time weight. Pay attention to the cardiovascular dock for 2 or 3 times a week because mentally and physically, said Elkaim.
8 do not eat enough fat.
Your body needs fat to burn fat, but the most important is to choose the right type of eating fat. Healthy fats, as they are fed fish, avocado, herb butter, olive oil, coconut, nuts and seeds are the best.
9re deficient in vitamin D.
Vitamin D is actually a pro-hormone that is responsible for many functions in the body and without it, you can not burn fat. Also ask your doctor about your vitamin levels and consumption of foods rich in salmon, sardines and check cow D.
10 is too late.
You can have a snack before bed usually, but you can prevent the body burns fat at the right time in the night to try to eat dinner at a reasonable hour and the kitchen closes.
"One of the most important things you can do to lose weight things, this is the time of the full expansion is that you go to sleep," said Madonna.
11 My body is toxic.
Environmental toxins are everywhere and can really change your hormones, body temperature and keeps your body fat. It is not possible to eliminate the toxins, but completely eat lots of fiber, protein, green vegetables, elimination or reduction of exposure can help the body to detoxify every day ...

If You Run

Those of you that know me are aware that I am not a huge proponent of running. The primary reason I feel this way is that it is hard on your body. Running actually has an incidence of injury rate as high as 79%. Walking fast, hiking and cycling can be just as effective as a cardiovascular exercise and are much gentler on your body.
I do, however, acknowledge that running has many positive effects on health, mood and fitness. It is one of the most efficient uses of your time for cardiovascular work, and has great endorphin benefits as well as being effective for toning some parts of the body.
If you run there are a few things you need to do to balance out your body. You can address these issues during your Dailey Method class in the following ways.
Work on your flexibility: For ideal muscular health there should be a balance between strength and flexibility in each muscle group. Both of the primary muscles of the thigh (hamstring and quadriceps) play an important role in running. To create flexibility in your hamstrings you need to make sure that you stretch the muscles both with your spine extended and flexed. The quadriceps need to stretched with both a bent and a straight leg. These variations in position will help to increase flexibility in all of the fibers of the muscle. Another part of the leg, which is incredibly important for knee stability, is the iliotibial band. Your IT band can be stretched by lengthening your hip away from your ankle and maintaining a neutral spine during the barre stretch portion of class.
Strengthen your hips to protect your knee: A major risk factor for knee pain is a weak gluteus medius. This muscle, located on the outer surface of the pelvis is important for hip stabilization in running. Without stable hips, runners can encounter knee, hip, and low back pain. The Dailey Method strengthens and stabilizes this muscle during both the seat work and spinal extension sections of class. Not only do you actively contract the muscle with different variations on your working leg, but you additionally get even more strengthening benefit by concentrating on working your stabilizing leg..
Strengthen your upper body: Running is great at strengthening the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves, but other muscle groups, especially core stabilizers, need to be strengthened to create muscular balance and decrease risk of injury. It’s important to do strengthening exercises in spinal extension, trunk rotation and flexion in order try to target all of your core stabilization muscles. Although the last 20 minutes of a Dailey Method class is where you’re going to get the primary benefit for core strength even from our first exercise, marching, there is a focus on being aware of your posture and constantly trying to improve it. Attention to posture and alignment throughout class (and all day long!) will make you a more efficient and graceful runner.
The Dailey Method alone can give you all the strength and toning benefits you need for a strong, healthy and amazing physique. I have seen Studio owners and many clients that have run their entire lives, and thought they always would, give it up once they realize how much better they look and feel by solely practicing The Dailey Method.
If you must… then run… but take care of yourself and your body by maintaining balance in your workouts.

Fuyu Persimmons What Are They And How Do You Eat Them How They Are Different From Hachiya Persimmons
Fuyu persimmons became one of my favorite fruits once I learned how to eat them! Follow Foods For Long Life on FACEBOOK !
What a Treat!
My friend Chris came over the other night and surprised me with a big bag of fuyu persimmons from her tree. I absolutely love these little fruits and planted a fuyu persimmon tree in my backyard almost 2 years ago. Unfortunately I have not yet gotten a single fruit. I hear that it can take up to 5 years. I wanted to buy some the other day but they were charging $1.50 each! The best bet is to find an Asian market like the one I shopped in last year in San Francisco that was selling them for only 50 cents a piece. But having a friend like Chris who brings you ones from her tree is actually even better!
Fuyu persimmons are shaped like a tomato
Its Not a Hachiya!
Im dedicating a post to this subject because of the big mistake I made many years ago. Hopefully I can prevent this from happening to you.
When I was growing up, my father used to bring home these large, oblong persimmons. Today I know that they were "hachiyas" but back then they were just "persimmons" because I was unaware that any other type existed. He would set these out on the counter and patiently waited until they "ripened". Actually, it was more like waiting for them to turn to mush!
At the exact moment when they are a soft, liquidy gel, they become this wonderful, sweet and creamy fruit. However, if you eat them a minute sooner, they are extremely astringent and tart. Most people bake with them but me and my dad just ate the sweet, smooth pulp with a spoon.
So the first time I bought Fuyu persimmons, I set them out on my counter and waited for them to turn to mush. I waited and waited only to watch them rot. I couldnt image why they never ripened!
One day at work, I noticed a table of women passing around a sliced persimmon. The slices were hard like an apple and I wondered how they could stand to eat that astringent, unripe piece of fruit! They offered me a slice and I was shocked to discover this crisp, sweet delicacy wasnt astringent at all! I then learned that this was a Fuyu, not a Hachiya persimmon and that they are meant to be eaten when they are crisp, like an apple. That was a wonderful day in my life!
![]() |
Hachiya persimmons are oblong (not short and squatty like a Fuyu) and must not be eaten until extremely ripe , soft and mushy.
High in Fiber
Persimmons in general are very high in fiber providing about 6 grams per fruit. I write a lot about fiber and I will write more in the future as it is one of the most important things missing from the American diet. There has long been agreement that fiber is beneficial in preventing heart disease and diabetes. And, of course, everyone knows that it keeps you going, so to speak. Although I think its obvious, the jury was still out on fiber preventing colorectal cancer. Well, recently the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) has upgraded their findings and now report that high fiber foods protect against colorectal cancer. They recommend women eat 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day and men should consume 30 to 38 grams daily. So eating fruits like persimmons (and pears, which are another high fiber fruit) is a good way to get your daily requirement.
Simplicity in Preparation
My favorite way to prepare fuyu persimmons is just to peel, slice and eat them. They also make a wonderful ingredient for a raw, fall fruit salad. Dice them up and add to diced apples and pomegranate seeds for a crunchy and colorful treat!
Theres not much you can do to improve the flavor of this wonderful fruit. My favorite way to enjoy a fuyu persimmon is to just peel, slice and eat!

bestdiet2015 diet2015 What are Omega 3s and why should you care
Hopefully if you’re here, you already know that dietary fat is our friend (provided we are eating good healthy fats).
Omega-3s are a special type of fat that are ultra-healthy, and essential in any healthy diet.
They can help your heart, help you lose weight, help brain function and mood, lower inflammation, lower plaque build-up inside blood vessels, lower blood triglycerides, help insulin sensitivity…. and so on.
You get the picture. They are a very good thing.
So what are Omega-3s?
Omega-3s are fatty acids, primarily found in certain types of fish (mainly oily fish). There are a few key kinds of omega-3s, namely EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid).
EPA and DHA are mainly found in fish, ALA can come from other sources such as nuts and seeds, and dark leafy vegetables like spinach. The body can change a small amount of ALA into EPA and DHA, but not very well. Your body can’t make Omega-3s itself, so you need to make sure you get enough of these wonder-nutrients (and if not, you can supplement).
It’s EPA and DHA that we really care about for health. Simply put, these Omega-3s are awesome. They have a whole litany of health benefits (see the list beow
Why are you telling me all this?
I want you to have optimal health, and for starters I doubt you are eating enough good quality fish (see below) or have enough Omega-3 in your diet. You need to be having 3-4 decent servings of salmon, mackerel, tuna (etc) per week.
Even if you are, I would still recommend supplementing with a good quality fish-oil to make sure your levels are optimal.
Personally I eat 5-6 portions of salmon, mackerel or tuna each week, and supplement with 2-3g of EPA/DHA per day. I get my fish oils from Genetic Supplements in the UK (I would take ~4 capsules a day, spread throughout the day with meals).
So what are these benefits?
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to (or linked with) the following benefits.
- Improvements in cardiac and arterial health (improvements in cardiovascular risk profiles, reductions in cardiac mortality, reduction in coronary heart disease, etc.)
- Lower blood pressure
- Decrease inflammation
- Improved insulin sensitivity and prevents and reverses insulin resistance
- Help with brain function and reduce cognitive decline
- Help with hypertension
- Help with some cancers
- Help with bi-polar disorders, depression, and ADHD
See a more fulsome list here.
Omega-3/Omega-6 Balance
Another thing to bear in mind is your Omega-3:Omega-6 ratio. Omega-6 are fatty acids that mainly come from seed-oils and vegetable oils, and the conventional Western diet is very high in Omega-6 (and low in Omega-3), and in the US it is estimated that the average intake of Omega-6 is not 10x-25x higher than our bodies are designed for!
Simply put, one of the key reasons to consume Omega-3s is to try and keep your Omega-3 balance as close to 1:1 as you can (as well as all the great health benefits above), as this is closer to estimated evolutionary norms. The theory goes that due to the anti-inflammatory benefits of Omega-3s, having this balance out of whack can cause issues throughout the body.
Increased Omega-6 intakes are associated with increased instance of inflammatory disease, such as:
- obesity
- type 2 diabetes
- metabolic syndrome
- cardiovascular disease
- irritable bowel syndrome & inflammatory bowel disease
- autoimmune diseases
- etc.
Gimme. Where can I get these amazing Omega-3s?
The best source of Omega-3s is from eating fish high in DHA/EPA regularly (3-4 times a week). This is not all fish, but generally cold water oily fish. Some of the prime movers-and-shakers in the Omega-3 world are below. Get a decent portion on your plate 3-4 times a week.
Supplementation with a good quality fish oil is also recommended, to make sure you are getting 1-3g of DHA/EPA in per day (even on days where you eat fish).
Don’t skimp on quality with fish oil. You really get what you pay for when fish oil supplements, and this is one where going cheap is not wise (unless you have no other choice). Heavy metal concentrations for instance can accumulate in certain types of fish (which then gets magnified when those fish are processed into fish oil supplements. Check this out for instance.
The best natural sources:
- salmon (wild salmon has more omega-3s, and a better nutrient profile, than farmed salmon, so buy wild where you can)
- tuna
- anchovies
- mackerel
- bluefish
- herring
- sardines
- sturgeon
- lake trout
