Im on a diet what are the permitted drinks
When following a diet to lose weight, it is important to drink a lot, at least 1.5 liters per day, to help the body eliminate waste. However, be careful, many beverages can affect weight loss. Little review different drinks, and preferred to avoid.
Beverages allowed during dieting
- Water is the only drink that the body needs and provides no calories. Drink tap water, the Plain water or spring water, sparkling water in nature. Attention flavored waters, some may contain significant amounts of sugar. Read labels and choose only those that are not sweet (or may not contain artificial sweeteners).
- A sugar-free fruit juice glass added (or 100% juice from concentrate) is allowed, but it is calorie and should be considered in your diet as the equivalent of a fresh fruit. However avoid fruit nectars as they undergo addition of sugar (sucrose) in addition to the natural sugar from the fruit. Also avoid fruit juice beverages (type Oasis®) because they contain only 10-25% fruit with added water, sugar and additives.
- All soft drinks (cola, lemonade, sodas and orange, and lemon extracts ...) are allowed, with the sole condition that they are "light", that is to say, sweetened with a sweetener intense (aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame potassium) because they are so non-caloric. However, these drinks are to limit or to book some occasions because they have the disadvantage of maintaining the taste for sweetness.
- Coffee, tea and herbal tea: coffee (espresso, filter, soluble), tea and herbal teas are allowed, provided the drink without sugar or sweeten with an intense sweetener. However, it is highly recommended to get used to taste its unsweetened hot drinks. Cappuccino and chocolate with milk and sugar should be avoided.
Drinks to avoid while dieting
- Drinks with fruit juice and milk, briquettes sweet flavored milk, syrups classic ...
- Alcohol is strongly discouraged because very caloric (including cider, beer, wine ...). During a diet, it is recommended not to allow a glass of red wine occasionally (festive meal).

Are You Going To Eat Real Food Again
Alright, show of hands. Anyone else feel like the holiday season has lasted inordinately long this year? They start decking the halls the second the Halloween decorations are put away, and the local radio stations been playing holiday music 24/7 since Thanksgiving. All the to-ing and fro-ing, the endless parties, the hype and hoopla. Its just over the top.And Good Lord, the food! The Hungarians gathered, not once but twice, over the course of a four-day period to celebrate (read: feast and drink themselves into a stupor). Funny thing – when were doing the imbibing, we rarely notice the gluttony. I never noticed the vast amount of alcohol my family members consume until I took my last drink in 1990.
To not drink or not eat is seen as a personal affront. My not-drinking created more of a ruckus than my drinking ever did (and trust me, I created plenty a ruckus back in the day). A chorus of "Oh cmon, you can have just one" was heard at every family event for years thereafter. The words addict, alcoholic, disease, and no thank you just didnt register.
I have a life-threatening allergy to alcohol and cannot safely drink finally did the trick, and the Hungarians never bothered me again. Now, its just common knowledge that I dont consume alcohol. A non-issue, really.
...now that youve lost all this weight, are you going to start eating real food again?
I was able to placate and make them verrrrry happy in other ways. I ate. A lot. Yup, ever since I was a baby theyd coo, "Oh shes such a good eater." So, you might imagine the hubbub Ive created the last six months of choosing to eat – gasp! – raw, living food. The horror of it all. The ongoing litany of "Oh, its just some crazy diet shes on" is the only saving grace thats kept them from bursting a collective blood vessel.
Just as were about to sit down to eat on Christmas Eve, my eldest brother asks, "Hey, now that youve lost all this weight, are you going to start eating real food again?" Everyone stops mid-motion and it becomes absolutely quiet as 17 pairs of eyes are now on me, waiting for that resounding "Why yes! Please pass the chicken paprikash" (and all will be right with the world, amen).
Isnt it funny? Real food: injected with growth hormones, antibiotics and preservatives; smothered in sugar, flour or fat; depleted of any and all vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
Yes well, even though I chose not to eat any of that "real food" (*smirk*) over the holidays, I know I consumed more nuts – almonds, pecans, cashews, walnuts – in the last four weeks than I have in the past four years. Somehow, I managed not to gain any weight. Didnt lose any either. So, this is the first month since July that the scale has not moved down. Thats okay. Im still going to bid adieu to 2008, 73 pounds lighter. Yup, gonna keep eating that "crazy" stuff that comes right from the earth and is filled with life force energy.
Wanna join me?
I know a fabulous place where a whole community of folks hang out, offering support, encouragement, recipes, tips, stories, laughter...youll be welcomed with open arms and fit right in. Promise. So, cmon and join me in Raw Food Rehab.

Carbohydrates are the Best Source of Energy for Athletes
The best way to provide your muscles the energy they need is CARBS! No secret there. Its not supplements or any other product with big promises to do the trick. Its really simple. A carbohydrate rich diet is the key for athletes to both fuel up before, maintain, and replenish energy from exercise.
Now the question you may be thinking yourself or hear many others say, "well, dont carbs make you fat?" Eating too many overall calories make you fat, not carbohydrates specifically. Carbohydrates get a bad reputation for that, but many of the foods that people over-indulge in are high in carbohydrates - sodas, pastas, breads, sweets, etc. Those foods all can have a place in a healthy diet. Finding the balance of how they fit in is where a little education can help.

Carbohydrates are both simple and complex. Simple and complex refer to the sugar types present in the molecule. Without getting too complicated, simple has one or two different types of sugars present. Complex carbohydrates are formed when many sugars are linked together. Foods contain a variety of different sugars.
You need foods that contain carbohydrates because that is what is stored in your muscles for energy. Glycogen is the storage form of carbohydrate in muscle and liver. A little over half of your total calories should come from carbohydrates for optimal performance in sport.

What are the snoring solutions
Presentation of different snoring solutions recognized and solutions against apneaIt advisable to consult your doctor ear nose and throat specialist or pulmonologist who will be able to make the necessary examinations to choose the right therapy, especially if you suffer from sleep apnea. Apnea usually causes extreme fatigue experienced during the day so let’s see some snoring solutions .
We present below the main therapeutic methods available on the market, including the mouth trays.
Such as the mouth trays and SOMNOFIT SOMNOLIS
Method of mandibular advancement
During sleep, the gutter advance the lower jaw a few millimeters. This clears the advancement language background and frees the passage of the inspired air.
This solution is known medical mandibular advancement. Its efficacy has been demonstrated in numerous clinical studies. It eliminates or greatly reduces snoring.
The American academy of sleep medicine also recommends this solution in case of mild to moderate apnea and snoring (less than 30 apneas per hour).
For more severe cases, the solution of the ventilation mask nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is generally more efficient. Generally, in case of apnea, a medical consultation is highly recommended.
Gutter mouth advance the lower jaw a few millimeters and prevents the decline of language background, clearing the air passage, which eliminates / reduces snoring or apnea.
Mask continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP or CPAP), is one of the best treatments and snoring solutions in case of severe sleep apnea
To prevent airway obstruction, air under pressure is blown into a mask applied to the nose. This positive pressure is transmitted via a small compressor, which is connected by a hose to the mask. The pressurized air expands the airways and thereby prevents the obstruction.
This technique is recognized as the most effective in cases of severe apnea.
Surgery in the treatment of snoring
In some cases , one of the snoring solutions is corrections, that it can be made to improve breathing through the nose or to correct abnormalities of the soft palate, tonsils or jaw. To do this, visit the ENT doctor or maxillofacial surgeon.

Whether and to which extent these beneficial effects on gut health are mediated by changes in the gut microbiome is yet still uncertain; and since "uncertain" is a word scientists dont like, Kristian Daily and his colleagues from the University of Liverpool conducted a study to find out, whether the non-negligible health benefits would be brought about by AI <> gut interactions.

But thats obviously not all thats news-worthy!
I did after all promise you news on products you may be using, as well - aspartame and acesulfame-k, to be precise. Now, while the former is a constant target of public (mostly broscientific) criticism, the latter has been a thorn in my side ever since I have started investigating artificial sweeteners.

Ok, the results have been derived in a Caenorhabditis elegans, a "worm", but one that has long and actually surprisingly successfully been used as a "model for studying the basic biology of obesity" (Jones. 2009) - I know, I am not convinced either, but if the results do actually translate to humans, this would be major (bad) news for the food industry.
In view of the fact that most companies have been pulling acesulfame-k from their products over the past years, anyway, I would not discard the findings Jolene Zheng et al. present in their latest paper in Chemico-Biological Interactions as meaningless, not despite, but rather because a scientists from PepsiCo was part of the research team which observed these significant increases in intestinal fat (=visceral fat of the worm) when the critters were fed with acesulfam-k sweetened coke.
Cheating? Why would be using artificial sweeteners cheating? In spite of the fact that there is no credible evidence for a causal relationship between the consumption of artificially sweetened foods and obesity (there is a correlation that could well be the result of reverse causation), there is some concerning evidence that the extreme sweet taste and the way people appear to escalate the dosages reduce your bodies ability to control its energy balance by thwarting with its mostly sugar-based first-line energy intake sensor.
What I would not recommend either, though, is to (ab-)use aspartame-containing diet coke as a "weight loss beverage": Its certainly ok to sooth your sweet tooth, when youre dieting and I am not saying that you must not drink one or another Diet Coke or Pepsi on the weekend. What I am saying, though, that I dont believe that the consumption of copious amounts of this stuff will result in a similar body fat reduction (see Figure 2) in you, where compensatory mechanisms, your sweet tongue and a whole host of other things complicate weight and even more so fat loss compared to C. elegans.
That being said, I would be inclined to know, when and if SUCRAM is going to be available as a food additive for humans. It does after all sound quite nice to do your tummy a favor while youre "cheating", right? Although,... when I come to think about it, we actually dont need a "new" sweetener to mess up our gut microbiome. As I already hinted at in a related SuppVersity Classic Article Series with the telling title "Sucralose, Hazardous or Innocent?" (Part I, Part II, Part III), Payne et al. (2012) have already identified fructose, mannitol and d-tagatose as promoters of lactobacillus growth and sucrose as their primary enemy (learn more about the interaction in Part II of the series).

Fuyu Persimmons What Are They And How Do You Eat Them How They Are Different From Hachiya Persimmons
| Fuyu persimmons became one of my favorite fruits once I learned how to eat them! Follow Foods For Long Life on FACEBOOK ! |
What a Treat!
My friend Chris came over the other night and surprised me with a big bag of fuyu persimmons from her tree. I absolutely love these little fruits and planted a fuyu persimmon tree in my backyard almost 2 years ago. Unfortunately I have not yet gotten a single fruit. I hear that it can take up to 5 years. I wanted to buy some the other day but they were charging $1.50 each! The best bet is to find an Asian market like the one I shopped in last year in San Francisco that was selling them for only 50 cents a piece. But having a friend like Chris who brings you ones from her tree is actually even better!

Its Not a Hachiya!
Im dedicating a post to this subject because of the big mistake I made many years ago. Hopefully I can prevent this from happening to you.
When I was growing up, my father used to bring home these large, oblong persimmons. Today I know that they were "hachiyas" but back then they were just "persimmons" because I was unaware that any other type existed. He would set these out on the counter and patiently waited until they "ripened". Actually, it was more like waiting for them to turn to mush!
At the exact moment when they are a soft, liquidy gel, they become this wonderful, sweet and creamy fruit. However, if you eat them a minute sooner, they are extremely astringent and tart. Most people bake with them but me and my dad just ate the sweet, smooth pulp with a spoon.
So the first time I bought Fuyu persimmons, I set them out on my counter and waited for them to turn to mush. I waited and waited only to watch them rot. I couldnt image why they never ripened!
One day at work, I noticed a table of women passing around a sliced persimmon. The slices were hard like an apple and I wondered how they could stand to eat that astringent, unripe piece of fruit! They offered me a slice and I was shocked to discover this crisp, sweet delicacy wasnt astringent at all! I then learned that this was a Fuyu, not a Hachiya persimmon and that they are meant to be eaten when they are crisp, like an apple. That was a wonderful day in my life!
![]() |
| Hachiya persimmons are oblong (not short and squatty like a Fuyu) and must not be eaten until extremely ripe , soft and mushy. |
High in Fiber
Persimmons in general are very high in fiber providing about 6 grams per fruit. I write a lot about fiber and I will write more in the future as it is one of the most important things missing from the American diet. There has long been agreement that fiber is beneficial in preventing heart disease and diabetes. And, of course, everyone knows that it keeps you going, so to speak. Although I think its obvious, the jury was still out on fiber preventing colorectal cancer. Well, recently the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) has upgraded their findings and now report that high fiber foods protect against colorectal cancer. They recommend women eat 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day and men should consume 30 to 38 grams daily. So eating fruits like persimmons (and pears, which are another high fiber fruit) is a good way to get your daily requirement.
Simplicity in Preparation
My favorite way to prepare fuyu persimmons is just to peel, slice and eat them. They also make a wonderful ingredient for a raw, fall fruit salad. Dice them up and add to diced apples and pomegranate seeds for a crunchy and colorful treat!
| Theres not much you can do to improve the flavor of this wonderful fruit. My favorite way to enjoy a fuyu persimmon is to just peel, slice and eat! |

bestdiet2015 diet2015 What are Omega 3s and why should you care
Hopefully if you’re here, you already know that dietary fat is our friend (provided we are eating good healthy fats).
Omega-3s are a special type of fat that are ultra-healthy, and essential in any healthy diet.
They can help your heart, help you lose weight, help brain function and mood, lower inflammation, lower plaque build-up inside blood vessels, lower blood triglycerides, help insulin sensitivity…. and so on.
You get the picture. They are a very good thing.
So what are Omega-3s?
Omega-3s are fatty acids, primarily found in certain types of fish (mainly oily fish). There are a few key kinds of omega-3s, namely EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid).
EPA and DHA are mainly found in fish, ALA can come from other sources such as nuts and seeds, and dark leafy vegetables like spinach. The body can change a small amount of ALA into EPA and DHA, but not very well. Your body can’t make Omega-3s itself, so you need to make sure you get enough of these wonder-nutrients (and if not, you can supplement).
It’s EPA and DHA that we really care about for health. Simply put, these Omega-3s are awesome. They have a whole litany of health benefits (see the list beow
Why are you telling me all this?
I want you to have optimal health, and for starters I doubt you are eating enough good quality fish (see below) or have enough Omega-3 in your diet. You need to be having 3-4 decent servings of salmon, mackerel, tuna (etc) per week.
Even if you are, I would still recommend supplementing with a good quality fish-oil to make sure your levels are optimal.
Personally I eat 5-6 portions of salmon, mackerel or tuna each week, and supplement with 2-3g of EPA/DHA per day. I get my fish oils from Genetic Supplements in the UK (I would take ~4 capsules a day, spread throughout the day with meals).
So what are these benefits?
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to (or linked with) the following benefits.
- Improvements in cardiac and arterial health (improvements in cardiovascular risk profiles, reductions in cardiac mortality, reduction in coronary heart disease, etc.)
- Lower blood pressure
- Decrease inflammation
- Improved insulin sensitivity and prevents and reverses insulin resistance
- Help with brain function and reduce cognitive decline
- Help with hypertension
- Help with some cancers
- Help with bi-polar disorders, depression, and ADHD
See a more fulsome list here.
Omega-3/Omega-6 Balance
Another thing to bear in mind is your Omega-3:Omega-6 ratio. Omega-6 are fatty acids that mainly come from seed-oils and vegetable oils, and the conventional Western diet is very high in Omega-6 (and low in Omega-3), and in the US it is estimated that the average intake of Omega-6 is not 10x-25x higher than our bodies are designed for!
Simply put, one of the key reasons to consume Omega-3s is to try and keep your Omega-3 balance as close to 1:1 as you can (as well as all the great health benefits above), as this is closer to estimated evolutionary norms. The theory goes that due to the anti-inflammatory benefits of Omega-3s, having this balance out of whack can cause issues throughout the body.
Increased Omega-6 intakes are associated with increased instance of inflammatory disease, such as:
- obesity
- type 2 diabetes
- metabolic syndrome
- cardiovascular disease
- irritable bowel syndrome & inflammatory bowel disease
- autoimmune diseases
- etc.
Gimme. Where can I get these amazing Omega-3s?
The best source of Omega-3s is from eating fish high in DHA/EPA regularly (3-4 times a week). This is not all fish, but generally cold water oily fish. Some of the prime movers-and-shakers in the Omega-3 world are below. Get a decent portion on your plate 3-4 times a week.
Supplementation with a good quality fish oil is also recommended, to make sure you are getting 1-3g of DHA/EPA in per day (even on days where you eat fish).
Don’t skimp on quality with fish oil. You really get what you pay for when fish oil supplements, and this is one where going cheap is not wise (unless you have no other choice). Heavy metal concentrations for instance can accumulate in certain types of fish (which then gets magnified when those fish are processed into fish oil supplements. Check this out for instance.
The best natural sources:
- salmon (wild salmon has more omega-3s, and a better nutrient profile, than farmed salmon, so buy wild where you can)
- tuna
- anchovies
- mackerel
- bluefish
- herring
- sardines
- sturgeon
- lake trout

Weight Loss Pills Just how effective are weight loss pills

Losing weight is an obsession for a lot of people. Often, it’s not because of any health risks but because of vanity—good looks are rewarded by this society. There are a lot of tested weight loss plans but people want to lose weight ASAP, so they turn to the so- called magic pills instead of losing weight the old way. The question is, are weight loss pills really effective? What do we need to know if we want to take them, and does our doctor need to know?
WEIGHT LOSS EFFECTIVENESS
A number of weight loss pills are out in the market, and choosing one is like eating on an eat- all- you- can buffet. Unlike with prescription drugs, the government is not as strict when it comes to these pills, and this is why companies have no problems selling potentially dangerous weight loss pills on the market. Take Alli for example, an OTC version of prescription drug orlistat or what we also know as Xenical. It claims to decrease the absorption of dietary fat, and while it’s less effective than Xenical, it’s actually effective in burning fat. Only problem is that there have been reports of liver injury because of this drug, which the FDA is still investigating.
WHY YOUR DOCTOR NEEDS TO KNOW
Some people decide to take weight loss pills and forget to include their doctor in the equation. When it comes to losing weight, remember that your doctor is your best friend. You especially need to tell your doctor about it if you have health problems or are taking medications. Some weight loss pills may interact with certain kinds of medications, and mixing them will not make the healthiest formula. A lot of weight loss pills are known to have side effects and telling your doctor which weight loss pills you are taking will help him tell you what to do in case something goes wrong.
THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A MAGIC PILL
Despite the millions of testimonials saying that weight loss pill work, there’s no quick fix when it comes to losing weight. Sorry for bursting your bubble, but there’s no such thing as a magic pill. Even if they are effective, you’d need to constantly take them to continue losing weight or to maintain it, and that’s just not healthy. Nothing beats losing weight the healthy way, and the only way to do that is to work out and follow a healthy eating pattern.
