Dry Skin Type and Essential Oils – Moisturize Your Skin without Chemicals

Your skin is the primary line of defense of your body against bad elements and infections. If these walls of defense will fail, you’ll giving passages for those harmful infections to get in. By letting your skin dries and hydrated, you are also letting those bacteria that carry infections to get in and cause further serious problem.
Dry skin is a common skin problem in which your skin loses its fatty substance or natural lipids that gives moisture to your skin leaving it unprotected.
This may be due to the winter season, steamy showers, harsh bath soaps or the rubdown or scrubbing skin while taking a bath. However, there are some ways you can do to treat and prevent your skin from drying without using products with chemicals. Skincare products contain chemicals in it that your skin don’t need such as mineral oils and alcohols. It can clog pores that can cause skin rashes and allergies and it can also strip off your skin’s natural lipids.

 Essential oils do more than just what other skin care products do. More often than not, they have regeneration properties that stimulate cell growth which then help damage tissue to heal, nourish and moisturize, improve firmness and tighten skin. Probably reverse aging for healthy and young looking skin. The main essential oils that best do this naturally and safely are as follows:

Sandalwood Oil

Sandalwood essential oil has both antiseptic and astringent properties. It relieves itching from your dried skin and for further inflammation of it. It is also effective and in great use in treating dehydrated skin. Additionally, as an astringent, it has an effective toning effect while fighting eczema away. Leaving your skin soft by restoring its ability to retain and gives moisture.

Rosewood Oil

Rosewood oil as therapeutic properties that best use in skin care. It has balancing properties that sorts out dull, dry and oily skin. Anti bacterial property of Rosewood oil speeds up damage cell tissue healing process. It also has a cell stimulant that promotes cell regeneration process, allowing cell tissues to replace and prevent further damage on skin. This gives your skin the needed tone and softness.

Frankincense Oil

This essential oil, though one of the most expensive oil, yet it has been an important tissue healer. It can act as an anti inflammatory that reduces skin irritation such as skin rashes and further inflammation of the skin if it dries. Save Money By Using Your CrockPot Slow Cooker


The economy is all whacked out right now and its scary. Im not watching the news.

I get an email almost every day asking if I am saving money by using my CrockPot daily.

No. What I am doing is not normal. Most people do not try to do what Im doing in the crockpot. We are pretty much breaking even on the grocery bills, thanks to BlogHerads. I am grocery shopping more than I ever have before, and am cooking way too much food. I am also buying ingredients that cost more than I would normally spend because Im trying so many new things.

But you can save money. You dont need to cook a different something every single day. You can cook a big pot of beans, stew, or a casserole and eat it for a few days in a row. You can stock your freezer with homemade broth, stock, and cream of something soup. You can freeze your own cooked beans. You can make yogurt. You can make baby food. You can cook a whole chicken and pick off the meat for future meals. You can even make playdough, crayons, or use the crockpot as a footbath (not really. this one is just for fun.)

When I was first married, I stunk at cooking. I still kind of do, but at least the crockpot allows me a bunch of wiggle-room. I would make Taco Soup every other week, and Adam and I would stretch the food to last for days by making burritos, or adding it on top of rice.

Ive put together a round-up of money-saving CrockPot ideas for you. I will continue to add more posts when I come up with them.

And my favorite way to use my crockpot: the lazy way. Plop in a hunk of frozen meat---it really doesnt matter what kind---and cover it with a bottle or jar of your favorite sauce. Cook on low all day, and serve the shredded meat over rice or pasta. Ive used spaghetti sauce, barbecue sauce, A-1, salad dressing, and bottled marinades.

If you are concerned about the amount of energy consumed by using a crockpot (which is a very valid concern!) here is a pamphlet put out by First Energy Corp., in Ohio. The chart on page 5 says that a crockpot uses $0.02 power per hour.
Heres another energy usage list put out by the Northeast Utilities System, that says the monthly cost of using a slow cooker is $1.17.

Have a Recipe of Your Very Own Featured in Zyngas FarmVille 2!

Holy smokes, thats an awful lot of people.

The premise of FarmVille 2 is that when you are growing and shopping for your food, you can then use the food that is in your shopping basket to create one of the in-game recipes.

I submitted one of my favorites that I make at the end of the summer when the squash and tomatoes are perfectly vine-ripened.
 

End of Summer Harvest Soup (slow cooker recipe)

serves 8
4 cups chicken broth (vegetable stock is fine!)
1 cup prepared pasta sauce
1 cup water
1 medium yellow onion, diced
zucchini, washed well and sliced in 1/4-inch rounds
2 yellow summer squash, washed well and sliced in 1/4-inch rounds
2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved or quartered (depending on size)
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1/3 cup dry white Cannellini beans (this doesnt sound like a lot, but they swell!)
1/2 cup pasta (to add 20 minutes before serving)
salt and pepper to taste
garnish with Parmesan and Romano cheeses

The Directions.

Use a 6-quart slow cooker. Wash squashes well, and slice in rounds. Place into slow cooker, with diced onion and tomato wedges. Rinse your beans in hot water, and add to cooker. Add broth, pasta sauce, and water. Stir in Italian seasoning.

Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until beans have reached desired tenderness. 20 minutes before serving, stir in raw pasta. Serve with grated Parmesan and Romano cheese.

HOW DO YOU IMPROVE YOUR BALANCED DIET


the Union of diet and dietary supplements has reproduced two food menus, apparently balanced. Locate yourself in relation to the composition of these menus and use the findings to improve your own balanced diet.

California menu

Breakfast: 1 bowl of hot chocolate, 3 slices of toast, 1 pat of butter, 1 tablespoon jam. Snack 10 am 1 coffee, 1 sugar, 2 biscuits shortbread. lunch 1 pizza bakery , 1 apple, 1 light. Snack soda 16 h: 1 chocolate. Dinner cereal bar: 1 large plate of mixed salad (tomato, tuna, hard boiled egg, grated carrot, lettuce, rice, salad dressing), bread, dessert cream 1 vanilla, water. In Front TV: 1 stick sorbet

Did met the nutritional recommendations?

Yes for carbohydrates (toast, biscuits, pizza dough, cereal bars, rice and bread), protein (tuna and boiled egg), fatty acids (butter and salad dressing) and drinks (coffee, diet soda and water) .No for fruit and vegetables (potato, vegetable pizza, vegetables mixed salad). They should be eaten at least 5 times day. No for dairy products (chocolate, vanilla custard). Must be consumed three times a day. And last not for simple sugars (hot chocolate, jam, chocolate bar, sugar vanilla custard, sorbet). So limit the intake of sugars.

For comparison, here is a menu respecting all nutritional. Breakfast recommendations: 1 bowl of tea lightly sweetened, 3 crackers, 1 nut spread margarine, 1 teaspoon honey, 2 grandchildren flavored Swiss, 1 orange juice without Sugar added. Lunch: fillet, braised zucchini noodles, 2 small potatoes in their jackets Champs, 1 fillet cream lightened, 1 yogurt 0%, 1 fruit salad syrup. Snack 16 h: 1 tea, biscuit. Dinner 1: 1 plate of green salad lightly seasoned with a vinaigrette of olive oil, 1 cold chicken leg, 1 pie slice, 1 apple, bread.
No excess simple sugars: honey and sugar 2 small Swiss aromatisés.5 fruits and vegetables: orange juice without added sugar, zucchini noodles, fruit salads, potato and salad verte.3 dairy products: Small-Swiss , yogurt 0% and Camembert.
You should also aim balance Tip: regularly write down everything you eat for a day. Then analyze your menu and adjust the next day your mistakes. You can easily and gradually acquire good eating habits.

Open Up Your Brain

The brain is fed and oxygenated by capillaries that penetrate its grey matter, but the cells and proteins of the blood are kept separated from the brain by the cells and matrix of the vessel walls, the blood brain barrier (BBB). That barrier can be breached by inflammation that lowers the heparan sulfate composition and stretches the matrix.

The blood can be considered a large organ with liquid surrounding the cells of the tissue instead of extracellular matrix composed of proteins and polysaccharides. Organs are typically surrounded by a basement membrane made of laminin, entactin (nidogen), collagen and perlecan (a heparan sulfate proteoglycan). These components are secreted by the adjacent cells, and the proteins and polysaccharide (heparan sulfate) bind to each other in multiple ways and hold the tissue together. The cells lining blood vessels, endothelial cells, are connected to each other by tight junctions and the space between the cells is filled with the extracellular matrix of the endothelial cells, the equivalent of the basement membrane of the blood.

Inflammation leads to an alteration in the structure of blood vessels that produces the gross symptoms of inflammation: swelling, reddening, warmth and pain -- the blood vessels dilate or stretch. Persistent or chronic inflammation of vessels can lead to changes in the composition of basement membranes and one notable change is a decrease in the heparan sulfate proteoglycan.

In my own research on the molecular impact of inflammation, one of my students, April Reimers, induced inflammation in cultures of cartilage secreting cells, chondrocytes, using a glucan (similar to the glucan elicitor that I used thirty years earlier to stimulate disease resistance in plants.) She used real time reverse transcriptase PCR to follow the expression of the genes involved. The inflammation transcription factor, NFkB, was turned on (as judged by a compensating induction of its inhibitor IkB) and proteins and enzymes involved in the expression of heparan sulfate proteoglycans were shut down. Our interpretation was that inflammation reduces some heparan sulfate proteoglycans. Since there are at least a dozen different HSPGs with different patterns of expression, we would expect there to be some exceptions from the general suppression caused by inflammation.

Inflammation caused by many different diseases opens up capillaries to provide access of the immune system to damaged tissue. Breakdown of the integrity of an endothelial barrier with an inflammatory decrease in HSPG in kidneys is observed as proteinuria (loss of protein into the urine) due to high blood sugar of diabetes. Breakdown of the capillaries also disrupts blood flow to extremities and is responsible for amputations in diabetics with poor control of blood sugar. Inflammation of intestinal blood vessels and HSPG reduction occurs in protein lossing enteropathy (loss of blood protein into the lumen of the intestines) as a result of heart reconstruction to repair congenital structural defects. The same thing happens to the BBB when vessels of the brain experience inflammation.

Breaching of the BBB is an essential initiating event in many diseases of the brain. Subsequent flareups of symptoms may signal repeat compromise of the barrier between the blood and the brain. The reduction of the barrier, including a decrease in HSPG, permits transit of antibodies, other proteins, e.g. the beta amyloid peptides of Alzheimer’s disease, and lymphocytes from the blood into the brain. The region of the brain that is inflamed and the nature of the interaction between the blood components and the brain determine the symptoms. Examples would be the autoimmune attack on the myelin sheath of nerves in multiple sclerosis and the aggregation of fibers of beta amyloid peptides with heparan sulfate on the surface of neurons in Alzheimer’s disease.

Shutting the blood brain barrier would seem to be the first step in disease treatment, but in some cases, the BBB must remain breached for medication to reach the brain -- the BBB is also a barrier to drugs. If the BBB is to be repaired, then inflammation must be stopped. In most cases, this is accomplished by anti-inflammatory drugs. In some cases, such as protein lossing enteropathy, heparin therapy can reverse symptoms. A very effective supplement to reduce chronic or in some cases acute inflammation is an anti-inflammatory diet. The components of these diets are discussed elsewhere on this blog. These diets have been used effectively in the treatment of MS, Alzheimer’s and many other degenerative and autoimmune diseases.

Make your baby stay asleep all night



How can I get my baby to stay asleep?

Can not unbearable if your eight month old baby wakes up several times a night?
 
You get tired and stressed and your relationship with your partner suffers. Sadly for the child sleep disorders that began in childhood can persist for many years. It is important to teach children how to get to and stay asleep.

If you do not, it could be embarrassing later. A woman walking in Paris when her child is mounted in his arms, reached under his shirt to keep his chest, then fell asleep. Conscious mother said that this is the only way he can nap and she wore it around this position for the next three quarters of an hour. This account is told by Pamela Druckerman childrens books in French Do not throw food.
However, some parents are assuming that half of the night with a eighth month is a sign of the commitment of the parents rather than acknowledge the child has a sleep problem. This despite the fact that in some countries like France to have a baby for more than four months has learned to sleep through the night is the norm.
So how is this possible? Why do some babies stay asleep while others do not? The reason seems to be something to do with the behavior of parents. Many English speaking countries are rather than letting their babies cry a little. They believe that babies cry because they need something and it does not matter does not respond immediately.
Babies wake from their sleep cycle, which lasts about two hours. It is normal for young babies to cry a little when they first learn to connect these cycles. The danger is easy to learn to depend on an adult to relieve him sleep after each cycle. If a child is able to fall back asleep on their own, even once, it will be easier to do the next time.

Stay asleep all night, will make your baby hungry ?

And of course, the baby may feel hungry and want a stream. But this does not mean that there is a need to be fed. The stomach needs rest too. We can all learn to fast overnight and have "breakfast" in the morning.
For some reason, many parents assume that for some time, they must reorganize their lives whims of baby. But surely a bit of frustration will not crush the child. To meet the ever babies means they will not learn what is expected of them never learn self-control and a lot of frustration. In fact, experts say that learning is gentle, is not harmful.
Sleep researchers like Jodi Mindell, who has examined many studies suggest babies a few weeks of age need their parents to take an active role in their learning to sleep well. Most university Pediatric like Teresa Pinella offer similar advice.
In the early months than babies with parents to light during the day, even for naps and to bed in the dark night. Help the child learn the difference between day and night is meant for example does not, rocking or nursing your baby to sleep at night.


Little things to do to make your baby stay asleep at night .

Its all part of what these days is called caring parent. Vigilance is the best form of spiritual discipline: stay in the moment and to be attentive to deeper problems, rather than foolishly jump to judgment or being attached to what you expect.
Unless we take a break and watch the baby we will not know if he or she really needs help. This does not allow the child to complain all the time, but just give him a chance or learning. Even young babies need to learn to wait for attention - after all, we do not accept always what we want when we want it, this is a normal thing that we experience in life. If they expect instant gratification, they will not learn to relax and drift back to sleep.
And when it comes to sleep, even young babies need to learn to be separated from their parents for a few hours. You can let go of consciousness if you are easy to be alone. Parents stopping and observing the quantity of sleep teaching.
However, if this is not done and they not stay asleep , and bad habits persist after four months of an infant who has not slept all night probably need a special program of graduated exposure using some form of " controlled crying ". It is gradually extend the time before getting out of bed for the child. The length of time the baby cries before going to sleep for several nights reduce. For it requires parental consistency.

Plant Your Own Herb Garden In Recycled Plastic Tubs




Fresh Herbs
Some herbs taste significantly different when dried and some dont. For example, I think dried dill tastes pretty good so when I grew fresh dill last year, I didnt think it was really worth all the garden space it took. But herbs like sweet basil, parsley and cilantro, to name a few, taste completely different when they are fresh. So if you want to use fresh herbs in your cuisine, you have two choices. Buy them or grow them.

Buying herbs presents several problems. You usually need a very small amount but must buy a lot more than you need and certainly more than you want to pay for (especially when they are organic). Its also very inconvenient to have to run to the store every time you need a sprig of parsley or a tablespoon of fresh cilantro. So I like to grow my own.

Grow Your Own Herbs
I have plenty of room for vegetable gardens but this year I decided to plant my herbs in plastic tubs. The biggest reason was convenience. My gardens are in the back yard, down a flight of stairs and a ways from the kitchen. I really like to have my herbs close to where I prepare food. So this year I took a bunch of plastic tubs Ive been saving (the ones you get when you buy organic spinach and salad greens), stabbed a few holes in them with a knife, filled them with organic potting soil and planted my favorite herbs. Best of all, they are a few feet from my kitchen door!
Another advantage of tubs is that it keeps some pervasive herbs, like mint, from taking over the entire garden.

Plant What You Actually Use
When I pick out herbs, I am always tempted to buy seeds or starts of every herb on the planet. And without fail, I use the basil, rosemary, parsley, mint, cilantro and thyme and watch the other herbs bolt. So now I try to control myself and only plant what I actually use.

Its a New Year
Is there a health issue that is keeping you from experiencing life to the fullest? Are you tired of being tired, overweight, inactive, depressed? Are you feeling as though your calendar has more doctors appointments on it than dinner dates? Are you spending more on medications than vacations? Is there a bad habit that is running and ruining your life? Or are you feeling pretty good but you want to feel fabulous? Now is the perfect time to make a plan to turn things around!


Running - Good for the Heart in More Ways than One
25 years ago I became a runner. Id like to say I began running for my health, but I actually starting running to attract this hot, young, good looking guy (who is now my hot, young, good looking husband.)

I was already 40 years old at the time and couldnt run around the block. Dancing was always my movement of choice. Throughout my life I took ballet, modern dance, ball room, jazz, anything dance. But I never ran and its quite different.

Doug and I both worked at Rolm Systems at the time. It was one of the first Silicon Valley campuses that really encouraged exercise (years before the likes of Google.) They had a big, modern workout facility, racket ball courts, a swimming pool, and more. At 40 I was one of the oldest people on campus. All of my employees were these twentysomething-year-old engineers who were incredibly fit and very active in sports. I had just come from IBM corporate headquarters in New York where the demographic couldnt be more different.

I noticed that Doug jogged every morning. He was a soccer player so running came very naturally to him. I cant imagine what made me think I could ever keep up with this fit, 30 year old man, but I was motivated! 

I found a track nearby and started running. I couldnt even make it around once. My heart rate shot up and I thought my lungs were going to explode in my chest. Not a quitter, I started walking a bit, and running a bit. Eventually I made it around the track. I did a little better each day. In fact, twelve weeks later, Doug and I ran Wharf to Wharf together, a six-mile race from Santa Cruz to Capitola! It must have impressed him because we were married less than a year later.

Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, I stopped running. At 65, my desire to start running again seems a stretch but certainly not out of the question. Its never too late to get healthier and in better shape!

A New You
Im always inspired when I think that most of our cells rejuvenate themselves within a year. So no matter what shape we are in (mentally and physically), we could do our very best to make sure we have great nutrition, fresh air, clean water, appropriate exercise, positive thoughts and nurturing relationships. After a single year you could be a whole new you! 

Whats Your Biggest Health Goal This Year?
Although people generally have goals for their careers, starting a family, financial goals, etc., they generally dont have a health goal. For me, this is the most significant goal one can have and I always encourage people to pick a health goal - a big one. And then, take tiny steps to achieve it. Goals such as:


Stop smoking

Get your blood pressure down 

Lose 50 pounds

Have better sex (whats healthier that that?)

Adopt a healthy vegan diet

Get off type 2 diabetes medication with diet and exercise

Be able to run a mile, 3 miles, a marathon (whatever is a stretch goal for you)

Beat cancer

Give up your biggest unhealthy food addiction (red meat, soda, fried foods, ice cream)

Learn to control anger or stress

Have more energy

My health goal this year is to be more active and to run again. Ironically, while writing my eBook, Health Begins in the Kitchen, I spent less time being active and more time indoors creating and testing recipes or sitting on my butt writing. In addition, I crushed a toe a few years ago which led to a painful neuroma. Although its healed to the point that I can once again walk for long distances, I havent gotten back to running - the one exercise that makes me feel phenomenal (runners high and all.) When I ran I had a higher energy level, lower body fat, lower cholesterol, and higher spirits. So this is a great health goal for me.

Big Goals, Tiny Steps
Big goals are overwhelming, whether they are health goals, career goals, or others. The best way to start on a BIG goal, is to slice it up into TINY STEPS. Lets use my goal of running.

Tiny Step 1 
Make the goal specific: To finish a local 5K fun run by summer.

Tiny Step 2
Research the local fun runs and pick one. Print out the details and hang them on the wall for inspiration with the date and time. Register for the race.

Tiny Step 3
Put a training plan together. 
For example: 
Week 1: Get good running shoes.
Week 2: Find a cushy running track nearby and/or buy a used running machine with a soft bed.
Week 3: Run/walk 1 mile alternating walking 1/4 mile, running 1/4 mile, walking 1/4 mile, running 1/4 mile. Increase total and running distance incrementally timed out to reach the goal distance of 5K (3.1 miles) by the date of the race.

Not so Tiny Step 4
Develop a physical therapy plan if I have foot pain from my neuroma (chiropractor for orthotics, acupuncture for foot pain, more cushiony running shoes, etc.)

Tiny Step 5
Monitor running plan by week. Adjust plan if necessary but dont give up.

Whats Your Health Goal?
What would you like to happen to your health in 2014? Go ahead, say it out loud. Write it down. Jot it on a post it and stick it on your bathroom mirror. Just having and articulating a goal is half the battle. Slice your goal up into tiny steps. Make a plan. Nothing is impossible!

Does Your Pre Workout Inhibit Fat Loss Study Shows Nitrate Supplements Decrease Metabolic Rate By 4 2

If you remember my posts about the first generation, arginine-based pre-workout products you will be aware that the only pump they produced was the word "pump" in their name or product description. On a side note:  I am pretty sure the fact that the other potential benefit is an increase in sexual stamina didnt hamper the sales either (Neuzillet, 2013; Hotta. 2014 ;-)
With more and more people openly declaring that they would no longer waste money on "good tasting, but expensive and disfunctional products", they industry was yet pressed to develop alternatives. Luckily, our body has two options it can chose from, when producing nitric oxide.

Fortunately, the industry has developed better alternatives...?

You know option #1, the arginine ➲ nitric oxide pathway, and - with all the hype and hyperbole that surrounded the introduction of the first nitrate supplements - I am pretty sure, you know the other one as well, the nitrate-nitrite ➲ nitric oxide pathway

As the illustration (Figure 1) I have "borrowed" from a comment by Jon. O. Lundberg et al. (2008) illustrates quite nicely, the arginine and nitrite nitric oxide pathway are the yin and yan of NO production.

With the "yan", i.e. the nitrate-nitrite ➲ nitric oxide pathway being a relatively "new kid on the NO block", that recycles (=reduces) inorganic anions nitrate and nitrite to form bioactive NO in blood and tissues during physiological hypoxia.

It goes without saying that there is a bottle neck to this process as well, but the rate limiting availablility of oxygen which hampers the argine-based NO generation by NOS becomes limited as oxygen levels fall is actually a signal for the nitrate–nitrite ➲ nitric oxide to really kick in.

If you take a closer look at the results of a study in the America Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Figure 2), you will yet have to realize that there is "more yin and yan", here than youd probably hope for. According to the data scientists from the venerable Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, present in their paper, "[d]ietary inorganic nitrate reduces the RMR." (Larsen. 2014)

Whut? Yes, you read Larsen et al. right: In their randomized, double-blind, crossover study, in the course of which the Swedish scientists measured the resting metabolic rate (RMR) of 13 perfectly healthy 18–49 y olds (17 women) via indirect calorimetry after a 3-d dietary intervention with sodium nitrate (NaNO3 @ 0.1mmol/kg body weight) or a placebo (NaCl), Larsen, Schiffer, Ekblom et al. observed a statistically and (probably) physiologically significant reduction BMR reduction of 4.2% which correlated strongly to the degree of nitrate accumulation in saliva (r²= 0.71) and fits in nicely with the reduced O2 consumption of which Bailey et al. were the first to observe it in response to nitrate supplementation during exercise (Bailey. 2009).

Interestingly, these effects were not - as you may have been speculated - brought about by changes in thyroid hormone status. And the subjects insulin sensitivity, glucose uptake, plasma concentration of isoprostanes, as well as their total antioxidant capacity were unaffected, as well.

Bottom line: If the 0.1mmol/kg were not equivalent to only 200–300 g spinach, beetroot, lettuce, or other vegetable that was rich in nitrate, I would probably say: Here you have it! Another supplement thats not just useless, but actually detrimental to your goals.

The way things are, I will refrain from ranting and rather suggest you simply skip the supps and consume the spinach, beetroot, lettuce and other high nitrate veggies right away. Most of the human studies which support the ergogenic potential of nitrates have been conducted with beetroot juice instead of capped sodium-nitrate.

And lets be honest, the weight loss advantage of having green and not so green nitrate containing vegetables in your is eventually beyond doubt. So, if there was a similar reduction in RMR from your daily serving of spinach, you can be more or less certain that it was compensated by the beneficial weight loss effects of the whole spectrum of nutrients thats present in this edible flowering plant in the family of Amaranthacea.

Childhood Obesity
With one third of Americans being obese, its not a surprise that childhood obesity is also on the rise. After all, its the adults that feed these children and set the rules. In fact, childhood obesity has more than tripled since 1980! Whether or not your own children are overweight, this statistic effects everyone. Obesity in this country, despite the age, leads to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other degenerative disorders. Its whats causing our healthcare costs to skyrocket. Most importantly, its one of the main reasons that this generation may not live as long as their parents. I recently read about a program that promotes good habits in children and I would like to share it with you.


5-2-1-0 Program and the Lets Go! Initiative
The state of Maine, trying to address this problem, began the "Lets Go!" initiative which is being adopted in many of their schools, childcare centers and after-school programs.  The program promotes the 5-2-1-0 Message which is:
5 or more fruits and vegetables 
2 hours or less recreational screen time
1 hour or more of physical activity
0 sugary drinks - more water and low fat milk (I suggest non-dairy)


5 or more fruits and vegetables
There are several challenges here:
The first is the childs personal preferences. Although many children eat some fruit, many avoid vegetables all together. But these habits are often brought on by the parents. Kids eat what you offer them and what they see you enjoy. No one was born craving happy meals. My grandsons love veggies. Why, because thats what they are fed. They help their mom garden and often pick the veggies off the vine and pop them in their mouths. My daughter-in-law helps run a school garden program where they are teaching the students to plant various vegetables and eat the bounty! Much to the parents surprise, the kids are going home and asking for salads!
The second issue is accessibility. Schools are beginning to get some pressure to offer more healthful meals (and no, ketchup shouldnt count as a serving of vegetables!). You should encourage your own schools to adopt healthy programs offering fresh salads, whole grains, vegetables and fruits while discouraging cheese drenched pizza and high calorie fried foods with little nutritional value.
Another issue is cost. You can feed a family of four at Taco bell for what it costs for a few pounds of organic apples. Its sad but true. But as long as farmers are subsidized to grow corn instead of fruits and vegetables, this fact will remain. However, it you factor the cost of health care into the equation, paying for food that eventually prevents expensive medical bills is a good financial decision.


2 hour or less recreational screen time
TVs and video games seem like a great invention for parents. Its just so darn convenient to plop the kids in front of their favorite show or to allow them to play a game. Then youre able to prepare dinner or just take a break. But sometimes this gets out of hand and kids end up spending most of their free time doing this. There are a few good reasons why this should be curtailed:
First, if they are watching TV or playing video games, they are NOT reading, drawing, playing a musical instrument, learning to play chess or doing something physical. Hence the term, "couch potato". 
Second, they are getting exposed to advertising! Marketing junk food to children is big business. In my post, "Fast Food Facts", I showed that the fast food industry spent over $4 billion on fast food marketing resulting in 40% of children asking to go to McDs once a week and 15% of PRESCHOOLERS asking to go EVERY DAY! 
Another problem with watching too much TV, especially at a young age, is the effect it could have on the brain. A 2004 study by Dr. Christakis showed that 2.2 to 3.6 hours of TV viewing by children from 1 to 3 was associated with ADHD when the children reached the age of 7. Earlier research suggested that the rapid sounds and images that the child experiences from TV is what causes the neurological system of a young child to mimic that frenetic pace and exhibit ADHD behavior. (Add fast forwarding from Tivo and your head can explode!)


1 Hour of Physical Activity
If you are old enough to remember when kids could safely go outside, you probably are thinking that 1 hour of physical activity is ridiculously small. Your school probably had a physical education program and when you got home, you probably played outside for hours. Then after dinner, you most likely begged to go back out until dark. I grew up in New York City and even I played outside more than one hour a day. But today, for many reasons, kids arent getting even a minimum of physical exercise. 
Get your kids in sports or set up play dates in the park, not at the movies. Go for a family hike or bike ride. Put up a hoop and buy a basketball. Just get the kids out of the house and moving!
Junk food plus little or no physical activity spells obesity!


0 sugary drinks, more water and low fat (non-dairy) milk
Foodbeast reported the "7-11 double big gulp holds 200% the average human stomachs capacity". This 44 ounce sugary drink supplies 800 nutrient-free calories! According to Robert Lustig, a UCSF pediatric neuroendocrinologist, "sugar is poison!" - especially the high-fructose corn syrup found in soft drinks. He believes that fructose generates increased insulin resistance. Chronically elevated insulin blocks leptin (a brain hormone) from signaling the body that it is full. So even though a child or an adult is drinking hundreds or thousands of calories from soft drinks, the body thinks its starving! Bottom line, dont let the kids drink soda.
Now, what should they drink? Water is a good substitute for sure. This program also promotes low fat milk but Im not a big fan of dairy for children. In Dr. Schmidts book,  "Childhood Ear Infections", recurrent ear infections can be virtually eliminated by removing dairy from the childs diet. The book, "Beyond Antibiotics", talks about an ear nose and throat specialist named Dr. Pullen who practices in Miami, Florida. Whenever patients come to him to have tubes surgically implanted in their eardrums (a common operation for children who have chronic ear infections), he puts them on a dairy-free diet for one month. After one month, 75% of the children no longer need the surgery! I wish I knew this when my son was 18 months old and had these tubes put into his ears. There are many dairy free beverages like soy milk, almond milk, hemp milk and rice milk that your children can enjoy. Many juices are also high in sugar and should be avoided.


Schools Almost Over. Why Bring this up Now?
Even though school is about to end, I think the summer would be a great time to try and drum up support for a similar program in your local school. To get some ideas on how to do this, check out LetsGo!
Summer is also a good time to practice these principles. Talk to some other parents and see what they think about the program. I like the simplicity of it. It provides structure and a few rules on how you and your children deal with food, TV, exercise and sugary drinks. Its easier to say, "you havent had your 5 fruits and vegetables" than just to say, "you need to eat more vegetables". Its more definitive to say, "youve already watched your 2 hours of TV" than to say, "shut that darn thing off, youve been watching it all day!" And once they get into the habit of running around and playing for an hour a day, you wont be able to get them to stop! Theyll be begging to play outside until dark - just like you did!

High Dose Fish Oil Supplementation Short Term Benefits Long Term Dangers Will Your Liver Go Rancid

Does a (very) high fish oil diet entail the risk of going rancid - in spite of all its short-term health benefits?
Dont worry, I am not addressing the prostate cancer issue, again. In a way, I am still going to resume a discussion, you should be familiar with from my article "Sesame Powered High Omega-6 Diet Boosts Endurance Performance in Rodents - High Omega-3 Diet Sucks" | read more. Its the notion that the extensive incorporation of easily oxidizable (or already rancid) omega-3 fatty acids into metabolically highly active tissues, such as our musculature, will only be beneficial until a certain optimal threshold level is reached. Beyond this point, any further increase of the long-chain PUFA content becomes as problematic as the overabundance of other fatty acids.

This article is about balance!

By now, you should have realized that this post is all about balance, the critical balance of stable saturated and unstable (poly-)unsaturated fatty acids - not in your diet, but in cells & tissue.
This is not an "anti-fish oil article" or anti-omega-3 article! Its an article to remind you not fall for the prominent black-and-white thinking and to falsely equate balance with mediocrity.
Recent evidence of the importance of these numbers comes from a study that was conducted by researchers from the INRA UMR in Montpelier, France (Feillet-Coudray. 2013). It is, as you may have suspected, a rodent study. With a study duration of 12 weeks and the aspiration to investigate the long-term effects of diets containing 50 or 300 g lipid/kg  in the form of either lard or fish oil, this was yet more than a concession to financial constraints.

In the life of a rodent, three months are equivalent to several human years (some sources would say 5 years, but I would not bet on that). A similar study in man would thus take several years - years in the course of which all study participants would have to be locked away in a metabolic ward to ensure that they eat nothing but what the scientists serve them.

Against that background it is unlikely, but not impossible that we will see similar changes (see Figure 1) in the muscle and liver lipid levels of a human subject within only 3 months, even if he or she would reduce his or her overall fat intake to almost zero while upping the amount of fish oil in the diet into the 50g+ range. For 99% of the existing human studies this means that they are 100% irrelevant in view of the long (and if I write "long", I mean "long" like in years!) term high dose fish oil intakes and the corresponding changes in the fatty acid content and ratios of muscle, liver and other tissue.

No changes in muscle fatty acid make-up. How Come?

Apropos changes! If you look a the data in Figure 1 you will realize that the fatty acid make-up of the musculature in the study by Feillet-Coudray et al. did not change at all. In view of the significant changes in the fatty acid composition of the liver, this appears to be counter-intuitive and if we recall the study design and results of the previously cited study by Ayre et al. (1997) probably a result of the comparatively high omega-6:omega-3 ratio of the purported "fish oil" diet, which contained only 15g of omega-3 fatty acids per kg, and a whopping 21.7g of omega-6s. With an additional 25g of monounsaturated and 27.4g of saturated fats it is thus by no means an "omega-3", let alone "fish oil" diet as the one in the Airy study, which lead to major performance impairments in muscular endurance (and probably strength, which was yet not measured in the Ayre study | learn more).

If you take a closer look at Figure 2 you will realize that - compared to the allegedly unhealthy lard diet" - the major difference is not, as people who still believe lard contained almost exclusively saturated fats could believe, the saturated-to-polyunsaturated fatty acid ratio, but simply the absence of significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in the mixed control and lard diets (one good reason to supplement a lard only diet with reasonable amounts of fish oil; e.g. 1g per day or 4g twice a week).

Not exactly representative of the contemporary diets, but still meaningful

From a scientific point of view the significant, but still small differences may be a limitation. From a practical point of view, the omega-3 : omega-6 ratios are however more realistic than those of a real fish oil only diet:
  • CONTROL & LARD ~ 7:1 vs.  FISH ~ 3:2 
  • SAD ~ 15:1 vs. HIGH N3 ~ 1:1 - 3:1
What they are not, however, is representative of the difference between the SAD (standard American) and a high omega-3 diet (HIGH N3).
You do not necessarily want to supplement daily, not in spite of, but rather because a recent Cambridge study shows that, compared to weekly administration, daily administration of fish oil supplements leads to an increased  incorporation of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid into platelets and mononuclear cells in humans (Browning. 2014). Obviously, this doesnt mean that the same will be the case for the liver, but it clearly supports my previous recommendation to do prefer eating fish twice a week over supplements.
As close as the FISH diet may be to the often hailed "optimal 1:1" ratio, the CONTROL and LARD diets both contain much more omega-3s / less omega-6s than the SAD diet. Against that background its actually quite astonishing that

  • all rats developed liver steatosis associated with moderate liver injury when fed the 30 % lipid diets
  • the rats in both the CONTROL and FISH group did so without getting obese (only the rats "on" the 30% LARD diet became obese; 11% higher body weight, 32% more body fat)
  • both FISH (+30%) and LARD (+103%) had elevated insulin levels compared to the rodents on the 30% CONTROL diet; despite higher insulin levels, the effective glucose uptake in the FISH group was normal, while it was already compromised in the LARD group
Its yet not all surprising and unexpected. The FISH diet did produce the expected improvements in total cholesterol and the HDL:LDL ratio. In spite of the -35% (vs. CONTROL; -47% vs. LARD) lower triglyceride levels, "[t]he fish-oil 30 % lipid diet failed to prevent the development of hepatic steatosis" (Feillet-Coudray. 2013) - an effect which may be mediated by concomitant increases in liver lipid oxidation, of which the researchers write that it

"[...] was increased with the fish-oil diet in comparison with the mixed and the lard diets. Within the 5 % lipid diets, the liver TBARS level was increased by 22 % with the fish-oil diet compared with the mixed diet, whereas within the 30 % lipid diets, the liver TBARS level was increased by 104 % with the fish-oil diet compared with the mixed diet." (Feillet-Coudray. 2013)
It turned out that there was a direct correlation of pathological lipid oxidation and the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in the liver (p < 0·001; r = 0·319). Accordingly, the...
"glutathione peroxidase activity was decreased with the fish-oil 30 % lipid diet in comparison with the lard 30 % lipid diet" (Feillet-Coudray. 2013)
The answer to the the question I raised in the caption of the image in the title of this article, i.e. "Does a (very) high fish oil diet entail the risk of going rancid - in spite of all its short-term benefits?" is "Yes, it does!".

Bottom line: In the end, the study at hand is just a reminder that "good" and "bad" are - at least in the realms of healthy eating - no constants. A high omega-3 intake, for example, has only been shown to favorably influence someone health if it corrects am existent deficiency. Once the point of optimal balance (whatever this may be) is reached, the beneficial effects such as the often hailed activation of the PPAR-alpha gene (which were not even significant in the study at hand) do no longer compensate for the increasing rancidity and susceptibility of the liver to oxidative damage.

The addition of high amounts of supplemental fish oil to your diet should thus be regarded as a therapeutic intervention with potential long-term side effects. Its a crutch, like any drug people use to avoid making the nevessary life-style changes that include minimizing the amount of processed foods and reducing, but not annihilating the omega-6 content of their diets, regular physical activity and practicing moderation, instead of super-sizing every meal.
